The Ratangad Fort trek is one of the most scenic and popular treks in the Sahyadri ranges, located near Bhandardara in Ahmednagar district. Standing at about 4,255 feet, Ratangad is often called the “Jewel of the Sahyadris” because of its stunning landscapes, historical significance, and natural beauty. The fort, believed to be over 400 years old, was once captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and used as a lookout point to survey the surrounding valleys. Today, it attracts trekkers not only for its history but also for its adventurous trails, rock formations, and breathtaking views.
The trek starts from Ratanwadi village, which is also home to the famous Amruteshwar Temple, a 1,200-year-old Hemadpanthi-style Shiva temple that adds cultural richness to the journey. From here, the trail gradually ascends through lush forests, especially beautiful post-monsoon when the slopes are covered in wildflowers. As trekkers climb higher, the landscape opens up into rocky patches and grassy plateaus. The trek is rated as easy to moderate, making it suitable for beginners with basic fitness as well as seasoned trekkers. It usually takes 2.5 to 3 hours to reach the top from Ratanwadi, with the descent taking about 2 hours.
The highlight of Ratangad is its iconic Nedhe, also known as the “Eye of the Needle” – a natural rock hole at the top of the fort that frames the sky and surrounding mountains like a window. This spot is highly photogenic and one of the main reasons trekkers flock here. The fort also has rock-cut water cisterns, ruins of old fortifications, bastions, and caves where trekkers can rest or even stay overnight. The caves on the fort can accommodate groups, and the presence of water makes camping feasible, especially during winter.
From the summit, the views are unmatched. Trekkers can see prominent peaks and forts like Alang, Madan, Kulang, Kalsubai (the highest peak in Maharashtra), Katrabai, Harishchandragad, and Ajoba. During the monsoon, the surrounding valleys and the Arthur Lake of Bhandardara appear lush and misty, while in winter the clear skies offer crystal panoramic views.
