The Gorakhgad Fort trek is a popular adventure in the Murbad region of Thane district, Maharashtra. Standing at an elevation of around 2,100 feet, this fort is smaller in size but steeped in history and natural beauty. The fort is named after Saint Gorakhnath, a revered yogi who is believed to have meditated in the caves found midway on the trek. These caves are a highlight of the climb, large enough to accommodate a group of trekkers, and often used as a resting or camping spot. The setting of the fort, surrounded by dense forests and overlooking valleys, makes it an attractive trek for both nature lovers and history enthusiasts.
The trek to Gorakhgad is considered moderate in difficulty but has sections that require caution, especially near the summit. The initial trail passes through a dense forest with a steady incline, followed by rocky patches and carved stone steps that lead to the caves. From here, the route becomes steeper and narrower, with exposed rock-cut steps and ledges that demand focus. The final climb to the top is thrilling, as the pathway is cut into a near-vertical rock face with steep drops on either side, but fixed grooves in the rock make it manageable with care. The top is relatively small but offers breathtaking views of surrounding peaks like Siddhagad, Macchindragad, and Ahupe Ghat.
The best season for the Gorakhgad trek is from October to February, when the weather is cool, skies are clear, and the rocks are dry enough for safe climbing. The monsoon months make the fort and its rocky sections slippery and risky, though the lush greenery and waterfalls in the area attract seasoned trekkers. Summer climbs are possible but can be exhausting due to the heat. Safety is crucial on this trek—sturdy shoes with good grip, water (at least 2 liters), and energy snacks are essential. Trekkers should also avoid attempting the climb solo due to the exposure on the final stretch.
At the summit, one finds remnants of the old fort walls, water cisterns, and small ruins, but the fort’s charm lies more in its natural formations and caves than in its structures. The view from the top is captivating, with layers of the Sahyadris stretching into the horizon, making the effort worthwhile. The caves provide an excellent spot for overnight camping, and many trekkers prefer night treks to witness sunrise from the fort.
