The Kalsubai trek is one of the most famous treks in Maharashtra, taking trekkers to the highest peak in the state at 5,400 feet. Situated in the Ahmednagar district within the Kalsubai Harishchandragad Wildlife Sanctuary, the trek attracts adventure enthusiasts, pilgrims, and nature lovers alike. Kalsubai is often referred to as the “Everest of Maharashtra”, and reaching its summit rewards you with spectacular panoramic views of iconic forts such as Alang, Madan, Kulang (AMK), Ratangad, Harishchandragad, and Bhandardara’s Arthur Lake. The peak also houses the sacred Kalsubai temple, which is an important pilgrimage spot for locals, drawing devotees throughout the year.
The trek is graded as moderate, but thanks to the presence of iron ladders, railings, and chains installed at steep sections, it is accessible even to beginners with reasonable fitness. The route from Bari village (the main base) starts with a gradual ascent through farmlands and grassy plateaus, followed by steeper rocky paths. Several ladders are fixed to bypass difficult rock patches, ensuring safety for climbers. On weekends, especially during the trekking season, the trail is lively with local villagers selling refreshments such as lemon juice, tea, and snacks along the way, making the climb more manageable.
The climb from Bari village typically takes around 3 to 4 hours to the top and about 2 to 3 hours for descent, making it a one-day trek for most. Overnight trekkers can witness the magical sunrise. At the summit, apart from the temple, the vast 360-degree views and strong mountain winds make the effort worthwhile.
