Tail Baila Fort Trek is a thrilling adventure destination located in the heart of the Sahyadri mountain range, in the Sudhagad region of Maharashtra. The fort is situated approximately 95 km from Pune and 125 km from Mumbai, making it easily accessible for weekend trekkers and climbers. A scenic drive of about 2.5 hours brings you to the base village of Tail Baila, from where the two massive and prominent rock pinnacles of the fort are clearly visible. These twin pinnacles dominate the landscape and immediately highlight the technical nature of the trek.

Standing at a maximum altitude of around 3,322 feet, Tail Baila Fort is known for its steep and almost vertical rock terrain rather than a traditional walking trail. The fort comprises two main pinnacles, each having inner and outer rock faces, forming a total of four climbing walls. These walls vary in difficulty, attracting both experienced climbers and beginners. The most used traditional climbing route is Wall 3, located on the inner side of the left pinnacle, with a climbing height of approximately 200–250 feet, making it suitable for amateur climbers and those new to technical rock climbing.

Historically, Tail Baila Fort is believed to have been constructed during the Maratha Empire and served primarily as a watchtower, offering strategic views of the surrounding region. Due to its military importance, the fort was later targeted by the British, who destroyed the stone steps leading to the summit to prevent its use in future uprisings and mutinies. Today, the absence of these steps is what makes Tail Baila a unique fort, accessible only through climbing and rappelling routes.

Reaching the summit of the Tail Baila pinnacle is a rewarding experience, offering spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding forts and landscapes. From the top, trekkers can witness Sudhagad Fort, Sarasgad Fort, Ghangad Fort, and the striking Navra–Navri Pinnacles, along with vast stretches of the lush Sahyadri ranges. The combination of adventure, history, and breathtaking scenery makes the Tail Baila Fort Trek one of the most exciting and sought-after climbing treks in Maharashtra.

Tail Baila Fort Walls – Climbing Routes Explained

Tail Baila Fort has four main climbing walls, located on the two rock pinnacles. Each wall offers a different level of difficulty, making the fort suitable for both beginners and experienced climbers.

Wall 1 is located on the outer side of the right pinnacle. This is the most difficult route on the fort and requires excellent climbing skills, strength, and experience. It is recommended only for expert and well-trained climbers.

Wall 2 is situated on the inner side of the right pinnacle. The difficulty level ranges from moderate to difficult, making it suitable for climbers who already have some experience with technical rock climbing.

Wall 3 is found on the inner side of the left pinnacle and is the most popular and traditional climbing route. With a climbing height of around 200 to 250 feet, this wall is considered moderateand is ideal for beginners and amateur climbers. Most first-time climbers attempt this route.

Wall 4 is located on the outer side of the left pinnacle. This route is challenging and demands good technical skills, making it suitable for experienced climbers who are looking for a tougher ascent.
